The 2013 Sunglass Grads

DSCF3511 copy

This was the sight of the room of my floor as I was spot cleaning a couple of areas in my room. From your view, it may be tough to count, but I have 61 pairs of sunglasses. This shouldn’t be such a surprise since eye wear accessories made the top two of my 10 Essentials. I don’t understand my obsession, but I definitely love the way a great pair of shades makes me feel. It’s a mix between complete invisibility and arrogance.

I’m taking it a bit hard that summer is drawing to a close. All of my favorite stores are swapping out my favorite summer accessory for jackets and scarves. Even though there have been gray clouds and rain for the past two weeks, I’m desperate to hold onto the sunny weather that let’s me bust out any one of these beauties you see above. As parents prepare their for kids school and fashionistas putting together their winter wardrobes, I would like to take this time to remember the sunglasses of 2013 that made it one of the best summers EVER!

The 30+ pair that I added to my collection helped shape my summer style. It was my mission to make an impression with every outfit and as the last thing I grabbed before walking out the door. Sunglasses quickly became a bold statement for my summer fashion. Here are a couple of favorites from my collection:

Mostly Likely to Succeed

Always a staple piece in any wardrobe, my black wayfarers was my go to pair when I wanted to say “I’m cool!”.

Class Clown

Mirror frames became an unexpected favorite for me this summer. I started off thinking they were overly obnoxious. While I’ve changed my mind about wearing them, I still describe them as obnoxious but in a way that is totally charming!
Most Creative

Keyhole frames have quickly risen as a way to separate yourself from the rest of the pack. With a design that isn’t like anything out there, this is pair of sunglasses I love to wear when I’m feeling a little quirky!

Teacher’s Pet

I rarely wear black, so I needed a pair of sunglasses to go with all of the tans and browns in my closet. These leopard print frames are definitely clutch when no other pair will do.

Coolest in the School

If someone absolutely forced me to pick a favorite pair of sunglasses, these would be it. This is the first pair I owned that made me feel simply Cooooooooooool.

In elevating my style, my faux frames have put in the most work to really help me define my style. Of course they would be top of the class, this is the go to accessory for my fashion alter ego.

The class of 2013 are some characters through and through. Like their owner, they don’t know how to act, but they definitely know how to impress.

Breaking Fashion Promises

There are two things I began to notice about myself when putting together this post. 1. I’ve been wearing quite a bit of red, white and blue this summer. 2. Plain diamond earrings are not satisfying my fashion accessory appetite anymore.

DSCF3482 copy

I’m really not sure if it has something to do with the Americana trend that passed over like a cloud this summer, but I’ve been walking out the door with these three colors on for a good deal of my summer. My outfit for this particular outing was rather tame. When the 4th of July rolled around, I let them completely explode.

DSCF3319 copy

When I started rebuilding my wardrobe, I swore to myself that I would never put these colors together again. For the longest time, I remember my old wardrobe mainly consisting of blue jeans, red shirts and white or black shoes. These three colors can be the foundation of a great outfit. If you want to use these colors and keep the outfit from looking to basic, you should switch the primary roles of the colors in the outfit. Instead of wearing a blue bottom, opt for red or white like I did for my Independence Day look above.

If this work for you, then you should coming out swinging with some killer accessories. My aqua watch and button shaped earrings showed up for the occasion. The amount of giddiness I had in wearing these earrings could only be expressed by my attempt to create a word (giddiness). Check out my 10 Essential, you’ll know how extensive my collection is. Diamond studs and pearls aren’t enough anymore. These ears need the jewelry to be various colors, shapes and characters. I cannot wait for you all to see my robot shaped earrings either.

wo(Men)’s Wear… It’s About Time!

There isn’t a happier time for me than when I come across an accessory that I fall head over heels for, and I manage to incorporate it into an outfit. I came across this clock necklace at Forever 21 a couple of weeks ago. I was out with Mrs. Gent and her best friend, Adrian. It was a fight to the death between Adrian and me for this stylish accessory. She came across the item first, so the rule of dibs entitled her to ownership. However, pity and a broke college-student budget was on my side, and the prize was mine!

If you read my interview with Danielle from Stylistic Aesthetics, my style is inspired by women’s fashion. My girlfriend is mostly to blame for such a muse. In a women’s store, I’ll buy whatever I think can integrate well into my wardrobe. Sunglasses, earrings, backpacks, and I’ve even bought some clothes. When it comes to clothes, I believe we shouldn’t limit ourselves to whatever culture deems appropriate for us to wear. If women can raid our closets, I believe we men should take the same initiative.

When it comes to accessories, it’s difficult for a man to get into a groove that works. I don’t think a man should have flashy accessories. Diamonds are going to shine regardless if they’re in a watch or a pair of earrings. However, I follow the rule the accessories should be functional and appear you’ve had it for a long time.

Since I grabbed my main accessory from a women’s store, I definitely wanted to amp it up with a very masculine outfit. I couldn’t think of anything better than these boots I grabbed from Dirt Cheap. They go for $40 retail at Target, but I like to get great pieces for greater prices. These shoes are tough. I’ve already worn them a couple of times, and they just get better with every wear. Not to mention, I love wearing them because they’re a favorite of Mrs. Gent. They gave me a rugged hiker look which went really well my jean shorts and henley.

I hope I’ve inspired you to go outside of your comfort zone. Women’s clothing stores are the places where I get my best stuff besides thrift stores. What are some good finds you’ve found in the clothing stores of your opposite sex? Leave a comment and let me know.

10 Essential: Clark Gent… Continued

It’s the exciting conclusion to my 10 Essentials. The five things you’re about to read about here are the absolute things that I cannot live without.

5. Sharpie Pens

What’s a warrior without his sword and writer with his pen. This is the pen that if I let you borrow it, I wouldn’t let you out of my eye sight until I got it back. They write as smooth as butter. Whenver I need to copy down notes or jot something down real quick, it’s always nice to have one of these around. Any other pen is inferior.

4. Converse Chuck Taylors

I respect sneakers heads for their commitment to the obsession, but these Converse are the only pair of sneakers I need. They’re the quickest remedy to dressing down an outfit and not be concerned with whether they’re out of place with your outfit. They’re classic in the best sense of the word!

3. Kindle Fire

I never thought I would see the day when I’d be okay with not holding a book in my hand. I’m an avid reader, and I was anti-tablets when it came to reading books. After reading the first Hunger Games in under three days, I couldn’t imagine what I would do without it now. It doesn’t quite have all of the functionality of an iPad or similar tablets, but it gets me through the most dreary parts of my day.

2. Sunglasses

Go back and read my Black Shades and Floral Prints post, and you’ll know that I cannot do without my sunglasses. I keep a pair in my car, in my bag, and clipped to my shirt. The mirrored lenses are really in right now, and they go great with a smile.

1. Clark Gent glasses

This is the accessory that started the legend. I use these as part of my Clark Kent costume for Halloween, and I just fell in love with the way they looked on my face. Originally, they belonged to Mrs. Gent. I ended up wearing them so much that they became mine by association, and the rest is history.

With that out of the way, I feel GQ ready.

The Great Nautical Escape

Here I am attempting to take some great pictures for my next post, and I get interrupted by hotel security about loitering in the hallways. We could have simply explained what we were doing and been done with the entire ordeal. However, in true Gent fashion, the Mrs. and I decided to make a break for it and have a little fun with the guy.

DSCF3184 copy

The hotel chase had us traversing across four floors and down a couple flights of gloomy stairs. For it to be so late at night, security was quite persistent with apprehending us. However if Gents do go down, we most certainly will not do so without an epic chase scene and an assortment of well selected hiding spots.

DSCF3204 copy

After finding refuge in the lounge area, we decided to catch our breath and figure out what aided us in our successful getaway. Mrs. Gent believed that our carefully selected hiding spots kept us out of harms way, but I figured it had something to do with my nautical inspired outfit. My linen pants gave me free range motion, and my shirt fitted me like a fine glove. It allowed me to lead our getaway efforts and ensure our safety.

DSCF3208 copy

The only thing I regret about our little adventure was the quality of the pictures. But, I have to say. I think a great story always trumps some style pictures any day. I’d like to think Mrs. Gent for giving us the moniker the High Fashion Bonnie and Clyde. Until next time…

10 Essentials: Clark Gent

GQ is one of my favorite publications in the world. It’s my dream to one day write for them and even serve as the editor. One of my favorite stories that they do is their 10 Essential feature. If you’re unfamiliar with it, they ask fashion industry insiders, designers, celebrities and various personalities to list ten things they cannot live without and talk about why they love them so. Some of the hobbies and items I’ve done in the past have been inspired by this story. I decided it would be fun to do the story myself in preparation for when GQ decides to sit down with me.

10. Tic Tacs

DSCF3172 copy

The white ones are my favorite. I discovered these addictive little candies back in middle school. Then, I wasn’t concerned with their breath freshening usefulness and more for the delicious vanilla flavor. Now, I always pop one after any meal when I’m out and about. I can’t talk to other fashionistas with bad breath.

9. Backpack

DSCF3166 copy

All of my readers know the special place fashion backpacks have in my heart. You’re guaranteed to never catch me out and about without my faithful companion. This tan one has to be my favorite. Those blue stripes on the straps gives it that nautical feel, and it goes with just about every outfit I can think of. I scored this one from Forever 21 as a gift from the Mrs., Gent that is.

8. Sperry Top Siders

DSCF3163 copy

These were my first expensive purchase as a fashionista three years ago. The first pair I owned I wore them with everything and everywhere, and they’re beat to hell as a result. There are versatile piece that should be an essential to any man’s wardrobe in the summer.

7. Polo caps

DSCF3167 copy

Another Mrs. Gent gift, this khaki one was predecessor to the collection I have amassed today. I didn’t get into hats until after I cut my hair. After I did chop the locks, I spiraled out of control into an obsession my wallet hates me for.

6. Earrings

It’s one of the most subtle things on my list that also grabs the most attention. When it comes to men’s fashion, the jury is still out on them as an acceptable accessory in our industry, but I never leave the house without putting them on. I started off wearing the plain diamonds, but I ventured off into other colors and shapes. With all of that experimenting, I came across my favorite pair which isn’t shown: pearls. Their a staple in women’s accessories, but I likes to believe I look quite distinguished in mines.

I hope you enjoyed the first five things I cannot live without. Come back the same time next Thursday to see my top 5 Essentials.

The Post That Almost Wasn’t… Me Then

This is the post that almost wasn’t. I’ve been on a path of self sabotage recently that has had me doubting myself. In light of the strides I’ve made, it’s been hard to recognize much of the progress I’ve made. I was becoming a recluse and finding myself stepping away from the people that are close to me in order to just feel pity for myself. I can just tell you right now it’s just not the place to be. Whenever I feel myself getting into a rut, I try to catch it before it gets out of hand. One of the ways I do this is by looking back into my past and seeing how far I’ve come. I always like to look at old pictures of myself for a great laugh.

All of these photos are from the pre-Gent period. It’s from a time where I pretending not to care about my image, but I wanted nothing more than to look like the amazing person I was on the inside. I have to say that my clothes were HORRIBLE. I really tried my best, but I honestly had no idea what worked for me. Even though I didn’t have the strongest fashion sense, there is one good thing I can say about the me from back then. The DeMarco Wills is these pictures was fearless and frighteningly optimistic. My smile was huge, and it took something TRULY epic to get me down. I didn’t believe in bad days or hating life. I was always excited to see what a new day brought.

However, I’ve seen that life can be a real BITCH sometimes. Someone taught me that we should always look at the good times we’ve had in life. Everyone has a story, and we’ve all experience our share of tragedy. However, we cannot let ourselves be consumed by those pitfalls. Look at the smile in these pictures, it was not held back by the obstacles I’ve had to overcome.

No need to worry though because Gent is still chugging along. I always rise from my ashes like a phoenix. Tell me. What do you do to get yourself out of a rut? How do you continue to stay in a happy place? I would love to hear.
