Weekend Warrior

I’ve always wanted to be one of those people who attacked a new adventure every weekend. Slowly, I’m starting to become more social and stop telling myself no when someone invites me out somewhere which is how I ended up in the sweet town of Jackson, AL visiting my love Mrs. Gent. It was the city’s annual Fall Festival, and I wasn’t ready for the treat I was in store for.

I got dressed that morning prepared for a bit of cold weather, but the weather never turns out the way it’s supposed to in southern Alabama. It’s the beginning of November, and I can still rock a pair of shorts a couple of days throughout the week.

The city’s main street is lined with booths and tables with people selling their wares and crafts. If I knew how epic this adventure was going to be, I would have made the trip with more than $15 in my pocket. I did make sure not to leave my walking boots at home.

I was really digging my Steve McQueen look next to this Mustang. Representing Charlotte Russe on my feet, I kept everything simple about this outfit except the color. These jeans which have survived countless washes and wears have seamlessly transitioned into my fall wardrobe when I want to casually make a statement. Whenever I do a neutral ensemble, I like to throw something in there that will stand out. Red is always a the best choice when you want to make a statement with color.

Until next time,

The 2013 Sunglass Grads

DSCF3511 copy

This was the sight of the room of my floor as I was spot cleaning a couple of areas in my room. From your view, it may be tough to count, but I have 61 pairs of sunglasses. This shouldn’t be such a surprise since eye wear accessories made the top two of my 10 Essentials. I don’t understand my obsession, but I definitely love the way a great pair of shades makes me feel. It’s a mix between complete invisibility and arrogance.

I’m taking it a bit hard that summer is drawing to a close. All of my favorite stores are swapping out my favorite summer accessory for jackets and scarves. Even though there have been gray clouds and rain for the past two weeks, I’m desperate to hold onto the sunny weather that let’s me bust out any one of these beauties you see above. As parents prepare their for kids school and fashionistas putting together their winter wardrobes, I would like to take this time to remember the sunglasses of 2013 that made it one of the best summers EVER!

The 30+ pair that I added to my collection helped shape my summer style. It was my mission to make an impression with every outfit and as the last thing I grabbed before walking out the door. Sunglasses quickly became a bold statement for my summer fashion. Here are a couple of favorites from my collection:

Mostly Likely to Succeed
DSCF3566 copy

Always a staple piece in any wardrobe, my black wayfarers was my go to pair when I wanted to say “I’m cool!”.

Class Clown

Mirror frames became an unexpected favorite for me this summer. I started off thinking they were overly obnoxious. While I’ve changed my mind about wearing them, I still describe them as obnoxious but in a way that is totally charming!
Most Creative

Keyhole frames have quickly risen as a way to separate yourself from the rest of the pack. With a design that isn’t like anything out there, this is pair of sunglasses I love to wear when I’m feeling a little quirky!

Teacher’s Pet

I rarely wear black, so I needed a pair of sunglasses to go with all of the tans and browns in my closet. These leopard print frames are definitely clutch when no other pair will do.

Coolest in the School

If someone absolutely forced me to pick a favorite pair of sunglasses, these would be it. This is the first pair I owned that made me feel simply Cooooooooooool.

In elevating my style, my faux frames have put in the most work to really help me define my style. Of course they would be top of the class, this is the go to accessory for my fashion alter ego.

The class of 2013 are some characters through and through. Like their owner, they don’t know how to act, but they definitely know how to impress.

Breaking Fashion Promises

There are two things I began to notice about myself when putting together this post. 1. I’ve been wearing quite a bit of red, white and blue this summer. 2. Plain diamond earrings are not satisfying my fashion accessory appetite anymore.

DSCF3482 copy

I’m really not sure if it has something to do with the Americana trend that passed over like a cloud this summer, but I’ve been walking out the door with these three colors on for a good deal of my summer. My outfit for this particular outing was rather tame. When the 4th of July rolled around, I let them completely explode.

DSCF3319 copy

When I started rebuilding my wardrobe, I swore to myself that I would never put these colors together again. For the longest time, I remember my old wardrobe mainly consisting of blue jeans, red shirts and white or black shoes. These three colors can be the foundation of a great outfit. If you want to use these colors and keep the outfit from looking to basic, you should switch the primary roles of the colors in the outfit. Instead of wearing a blue bottom, opt for red or white like I did for my Independence Day look above.

If this work for you, then you should coming out swinging with some killer accessories. My aqua watch and button shaped earrings showed up for the occasion. The amount of giddiness I had in wearing these earrings could only be expressed by my attempt to create a word (giddiness). Check out my 10 Essential, you’ll know how extensive my collection is. Diamond studs and pearls aren’t enough anymore. These ears need the jewelry to be various colors, shapes and characters. I cannot wait for you all to see my robot shaped earrings either.

It Still Feels Like Summer Without the Sun

It feels like I’m writing my first post all over again. I decided to take a break because I had a few things that came into my life that needed my immediate attention. However, there was no way I could EVER forget about Clark Gent. This man is a part of who I am, and he’s been itching to get back on here to show you everything he’s been up to. Summer is quickly coming to an end. It doesn’t feel like it here in Mobile, AL. With all of the rain we’ve been having, I’d swear I wouldn’t be able to get a chance to feel the summer sun again. However, it doesn’t have to look like summer for me because I live like it’s summer.

DSCF3437 copy

I have everything you need for a complete summertime wardrobe: bright-colored pants, bold t-shirts, and unique sunnies (sunglasses). The list goes on. However, I was stomping around in Mrs. Gent’s hometown, so I wanted to fly under the radar on this one. I kept the colors really unassuming with my Gap Lived-Wash chinos, and a tank top I cannot remember where I bought it from. The one thing I do know is it fits me perfectly. I finished off the outfit with my white high top Chuck Taylors, and my mirrored lenses from Charlotte Russe.

This outfit was great because it perfectly captured the essence of summer. I just decided to turn the concept on its head with a quieter color scheme. This combination of hunter green and gray is great for the fall. With an outfit like this, I usually would have turned up the colors but the day was a little dim. I think my sunglasses added more than enough summer attitude for the day.

It’s so great to be back again. I pretty sure there won’t be any unexpected incidents that will pull me away from my baby, but you just never know. I’d like to thank Mrs. Clark Gent for taking my pictures. Anyone reading this should go check out her blog as well. While I’ve been absent for some time. Her blog hasn’t missed a beat.

wo(Men)’s Wear… It’s About Time!

There isn’t a happier time for me than when I come across an accessory that I fall head over heels for, and I manage to incorporate it into an outfit. I came across this clock necklace at Forever 21 a couple of weeks ago. I was out with Mrs. Gent and her best friend, Adrian. It was a fight to the death between Adrian and me for this stylish accessory. She came across the item first, so the rule of dibs entitled her to ownership. However, pity and a broke college-student budget was on my side, and the prize was mine!

If you read my interview with Danielle from Stylistic Aesthetics, my style is inspired by women’s fashion. My girlfriend is mostly to blame for such a muse. In a women’s store, I’ll buy whatever I think can integrate well into my wardrobe. Sunglasses, earrings, backpacks, and I’ve even bought some clothes. When it comes to clothes, I believe we shouldn’t limit ourselves to whatever culture deems appropriate for us to wear. If women can raid our closets, I believe we men should take the same initiative.

When it comes to accessories, it’s difficult for a man to get into a groove that works. I don’t think a man should have flashy accessories. Diamonds are going to shine regardless if they’re in a watch or a pair of earrings. However, I follow the rule the accessories should be functional and appear you’ve had it for a long time.

Since I grabbed my main accessory from a women’s store, I definitely wanted to amp it up with a very masculine outfit. I couldn’t think of anything better than these boots I grabbed from Dirt Cheap. They go for $40 retail at Target, but I like to get great pieces for greater prices. These shoes are tough. I’ve already worn them a couple of times, and they just get better with every wear. Not to mention, I love wearing them because they’re a favorite of Mrs. Gent. They gave me a rugged hiker look which went really well my jean shorts and henley.

I hope I’ve inspired you to go outside of your comfort zone. Women’s clothing stores are the places where I get my best stuff besides thrift stores. What are some good finds you’ve found in the clothing stores of your opposite sex? Leave a comment and let me know.

This past Saturday I met up with business partner/friend, Brett, to discuss the progress of our business venture, and some of the ideas we had for pushing us on into the future. To say the least, it was a very productive meeting. I even managed to receive a kind word in the form of a compliment. However repeating it in such a public arena, his scorn would rain down upon me, and I would never hear the end of it. Then, on my way home, I started a conversation with Mrs. Gent. It was more of her venting and me listening, but I suddenly developed this call to action. I went to bed exhausted, but my was mind fully at work with notions to start building a better me both professionally and personally. My fire was reignited.

DSCF3291 copy

With the many times I’ve been turned for reporter and writing positions, those rejections started to weigh heavily on my spirit. I started going through my life on auto pilot. Every day it was good enough for me just to wake up, go to work, get in bed and do it all over again the next day. My complacency was even manifesting itself through the content of my blog. I was getting sloppy in my writing and lazy about making the effort to take photos for my post. Not anymore I say!

DSCF3299 copy

I’m pushing myself now more than I ever have, so I can be just as brilliant as the orange cap sitting a top of my head. Because I cannot ask anyone to hold me to a certain standard when, I refuse to do so myself. I’ve thrown myself back into a strict workout regime, sending in resumes to publications and believing in myself.

DSCF3309 copy

Orange is the best color to represent my new work ethic. Against any background, it’s the first thing that catches your eye. This is how I want to be when presenting myself to a potential employer. Anytime you want to go with an eye-catching color likes this bright orange, I always suggest pairing it with a very simple outfit. I got these medium-washed cutoff shorts from JCP. They’re the perfect anchor for an outfit if you decide you want to get a little crazy with your top. I put mine together with a graphic tank top I got from American Eagle and some canvas sneakers from JCP also. Each one of them had a little splash of orange that just called for my orange Polo cap to be used to bring it out. What is the color that takes the suck out of your day? During those times it feels like you’re being dragged down, throw that color on to make your day seem brighter.

10 Essential: Clark Gent… Continued

It’s the exciting conclusion to my 10 Essentials. The five things you’re about to read about here are the absolute things that I cannot live without.

5. Sharpie Pens

What’s a warrior without his sword and writer with his pen. This is the pen that if I let you borrow it, I wouldn’t let you out of my eye sight until I got it back. They write as smooth as butter. Whenver I need to copy down notes or jot something down real quick, it’s always nice to have one of these around. Any other pen is inferior.

4. Converse Chuck Taylors

I respect sneakers heads for their commitment to the obsession, but these Converse are the only pair of sneakers I need. They’re the quickest remedy to dressing down an outfit and not be concerned with whether they’re out of place with your outfit. They’re classic in the best sense of the word!

3. Kindle Fire

I never thought I would see the day when I’d be okay with not holding a book in my hand. I’m an avid reader, and I was anti-tablets when it came to reading books. After reading the first Hunger Games in under three days, I couldn’t imagine what I would do without it now. It doesn’t quite have all of the functionality of an iPad or similar tablets, but it gets me through the most dreary parts of my day.

2. Sunglasses

Go back and read my Black Shades and Floral Prints post, and you’ll know that I cannot do without my sunglasses. I keep a pair in my car, in my bag, and clipped to my shirt. The mirrored lenses are really in right now, and they go great with a smile.

1. Clark Gent glasses

This is the accessory that started the legend. I use these as part of my Clark Kent costume for Halloween, and I just fell in love with the way they looked on my face. Originally, they belonged to Mrs. Gent. I ended up wearing them so much that they became mine by association, and the rest is history.

With that out of the way, I feel GQ ready.
